I had ridiculously low expectations for this episode that, once completed, surprised me from almost every point of view. The story is enjoyable, with some interesting ideas such as the satirical take on penitentiary colonies and consumerist tourism, while some ideas are a bit outlandish, like the giant monkey at the end.
The much-criticized Monkey Kombat actually entertained me and forced me to use pen and paper to progress. Grandpa Marley’s identity produces some inconsistencies, although Return’s interpretation makes it clear that [SPOILER FOLLOWS]
the entire narrative framework is the deliberate work of Guybrush as an intentionally unreliable narrator
[END OF SPOILER].
I also really appreciated the graphic style, a 3D experiment quite similar to what was done with Grim Fandango, while still maintaining some graphic elements taken from the magnificent third chapter (such as the beautiful clouds).
That being said, it’s a worthy episode of the saga, not the best but definitely fun.
